Let’s Straighten a Few Things Out: Busting Popular Misconceptions About Braces

Braces have allowed millions of people with mild to severe dental misalignments to achieve straighter and healthier smiles that can last for a lifetime. While this orthodontic treatment is incredibly common, there are a few popular falsehoods about them floating around that might give some people the wrong idea of how they work. Here are three common misconceptions about traditional metal braces as well as the facts about this effective orthodontic method.

Falsehood Number One: Braces Cause Electrical Problems

Some people erroneously believe that braces will set off a metal detector at the airport, pick up radio signals, or interfere with electronic devices. The truth is that the metal used in braces does not conduct electricity or react to magnetism in any way that can disrupt the function of machines around the patient. This means that you can use walkie-talkies and go through security checkpoints without your braces causing any problems.

Falsehood Number Two: Braces Are Incredibly Painful

While patients wearing braces can expect to experience some discomfort during their treatment, this stress will not be constant and there will be long periods of time when your braces feel completely comfortable. The uncomfortable periods usually happen after the appliance is adjusted when your teeth are getting used to the change in tension, and you can manage this discomfort by sticking to softer foods and taking over-the-counter pain relievers.

Falsehood Number Three: Braces Interfere with Everyday Activities

Many people believe that braces will make it impossible to play sports or a woodwind instrument such as a saxophone, but nothing could be further from the truth. While you can expect to need some time to adjust when playing your instrument after getting braces, you will eventually be able to play normally. You’ll also still be able to play sports as long as you wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and orthodontic appliances. If you’re worried about your braces getting caught on someone else’s while kissing them, that happening is virtually impossible.

Don’t let a few popular falsehoods make you think that orthodontic treatments are more trouble than they’re worth. Traditional metal braces may be the best way to help you achieve the healthiest smile possible.
