Dental Insurance Explained: Is Sedation Dentistry Covered?

When you signed up for dental insurance, you imagined that it would save you on all your dental expenses, but that’s not how it usually works! Although you may feel that sedation dentistry should be covered by your dental insurance plan, it most likely isn’t. In this post, you’ll learn a little more about how insurance works, when sedation is covered, and why you should still consider this option.

Why Is Sedation Dentistry Not Typically Covered by Insurance?

Dental insurance, in general, doesn’t pay for treatments and services that are considered “elective” or “luxuries.” Some of these are cosmetic procedures, dental implant placement, and sedation dentistry most of the time.

Unfortunately, sedation dentistry can come at a heavy out-of-pocket cost. In fact, for more intensive options, the price can match or exceed that of the procedure itself! As the gentlest form of sedation, nitrous oxide tends to be much more affordable.

What Are Some Exceptions to the Norm?

Although the normal trend is for dental insurance to not cover the cost of sedation, there are situations in which companies will help pay for this service. For instance, if you have physical or developmental special needs, sedation becomes necessary to keep you still and comfortable for your dental care.

Another example of an exception is a patient who has been officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. With an established need, this patient’s sedation may be covered. Finally, if you are undergoing an exceptionally complex treatment, such as multiple tooth extractions, your plan may pay toward the cost of sedation.

Is Sedation Dentistry Worth the Out-of-Pocket Cost?

If your insurance policy doesn’t include sedation coverage, you may be wondering if this extra cost is worthwhile, and the truth is that there are many factors you have to consider in that decision. Maybe a routine checkup stresses you out, making sedation a smart investment. Perhaps for a small procedure like a filling, you’re fine, but for a root canal, sedation would help you have a more comfortable experience.

Fortunately, you don’t have to make this choice alone. Talking to your dentist about your feelings, needs, and concerns will lead to a discussion of your options and their professional recommendations.

Whether your insurance policy contribute to the cost of sedation dentistry or not, you and your dentist can determine if it’s a good idea for you. Although cost is a concern, it’s more important to have successful dental care. If sedation will give you a better visit in the chair, any out-of-pocket cost is worth it!
